Finding Purpose: What is Command + Create?
Let's create with purpose.
There I was, staring at a blank coloring page, surrounded by a scattered assortment of alcohol markers — completely frozen on which color to start with. Good old coloring block.
I got into adult coloring last August, looking for a way to unwind after long days of writing. I’ll pick up a cute coloring book and a starter set of markers, I thought naively. It’ll be a nice way to chill out.
I should’ve known I can’t do things halfway. Before I knew it, I acquired the famous Ohuhu 320 marker set (pictured above), created an Instagram dedicated to my coloring projects with over 1,000 followers, and found myself moderating a Facebook group with over 100,000 members. (Yes, really. Adult coloring is serious business, folks.)
So, “coloring block.” It’s what we call the stubborn lack of ideas when it comes to coloring a page. Maybe it’s mental fatigue. Maybe it’s perfectionism. Either way, your brain draws a complete blank.
Sound familiar? It's a lot like that blinking cursor on a blank document, taunting you with its rhythmic persistence. Writer's block, coloring block – I'm well acquainted with both.
Well, here's the thing about coloring: When you're stuck, sometimes the best thing you can do is just pick a color. Any color. Start with a small detail that draws your eye, and let the piece evolve naturally.
The perfectionist in you might scream that you're doing it wrong, that you need a complete color palette planned out, that you should probably watch a few more TikTok tutorials first.
But guess what? The only way forward is through.
It hit me recently that I've been approaching my career the same way I initially approached coloring – overthinking, overplanning, and sometimes forgetting why I started in the first place.
Which brings me to this blog, and why I'm here talking to you.
Why Another Content Marketing Blog?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Another content marketer who thinks their opinion is worth a damn.
Yes, there are hundreds of content marketing blogs out there. Yes, you can find freelancing advice everywhere you look. So why am I adding my voice to the mix?
Because somewhere out there, someone is where I was years ago, launching a niche blog from my college dorm room, figuring things out through pure trial and error. Or maybe they're where I was more recently, diving headfirst into freelancing with no safety net or prospects, wondering if they're making the right choice.
Because I believe stories matter. Personal stories cut through the noise, help us connect, and remind us we’re not alone in our experiences. It’s why my college cosplay news site, CosPureé, went viral, resonating with niche communities.
And it’s why I’ve decided to start writing again — this time, for me.
Stories Bring Us Together
Recently, I was filling out a job application (shhh, it's for one of my dream jobs; I wouldn't leave freelancing for anything less) that asked about audience growth. I could’ve rattled off metrics and strategies.
But instead, I found myself writing about storytelling — about how genuine connections come from sharing real experiences, in all their messy, imperfect glory. How I've found the most authentic growth in showing vulnerability.
The most valuable insights often come from the stories we’re hesitant to share because we think they’re too personal or not “professional” enough.
That's what command + create is about — breaking down the barrier between "professional content" and authentic storytelling. It’s about sharing what I’ve learned — both in and out of the proverbial office (read: my kitchen table). It’s about connecting the dots between personal and professional experiences to provide advice that’s relatable, approachable, and genuinely useful. (And hopefully, sometimes funny.)
For me, command + create isn’t just another boring how-to blog. It’s a space where freelancers, content marketers, and creatives can find real, actionable advice—the kind that doesn’t feel preachy or generic. Here, I’m sharing personal stories and lessons learned from a career that’s seen its share of pivots, successes, and missteps.
If this blog helps just one person feel less stuck or inspired to try something new, I’ll consider it a huge success!
What's Next
In the coming posts, I'll be sharing more about:
- The real nuts and bolts of B2B SaaS content creation
- How to build a sustainable freelance career (without burning out)
- A deep dive into my tool stack (both physical and digital)
- And yes, probably more analogies between coloring and content creation (because trust me, there are plenty)
So whether you're a fellow content marketer, a freelancer finding your way, or just someone curious about what goes on in my head, welcome to command + create.
Let’s color outside the lines together. Let’s talk about stories that matter.
And let’s create with purpose.
